Hey! Keep Shut!!!

Gbenga! Gbenga! watch what you say, bridle your tongue. I always tell you to be very careful, Ma lo ko ra e sinu wahala (translation: Do not get yourself in trouble)

The above statement was a warning my mum always told me when I was younger. I had the tendency to be an “amebo” (tattletale) and to be honest it put me in a whole lot of trouble. I am all grown up now and the warning still translates to this day and age for me and a whole lot of us out there. It relays to the sharing of wrong information, the environment we share it in and how it puts us in tight positions that may prove disastrous to us.

A friend of mine once found herself in a situation where she divulged information near a wrong party and paid for it. She was in an Uber on her way home and chose that period to discuss on the phone about her transactions for the last month amounting to a whole lot of money. She noticed the uber took a longer route when they eventually ended up in the hands of notorious thugs (Thugs that the driver got in touch with). My friend still thanks God today that she was able to get out of that experience with her self still intact. You see she had given the Uber driver the impression that she had a whole lot of cash on hand, whereas the money was meant for the business she worked at, the driver just got hooked as he heard the millions being doled and spoken about.

There’s also a reason why military personnel talk to each other in codes and signals and don’t share general information to the public, This helps keep them safe and also prevents the enemy from latching onto their plans. We all need to imbibe this discipline as it will be helpful in keeping us safe, we need to watch the information we share, where we share the information and whomever it is the information is being passed to or being passed around. The truth is you don’t know who will be near and get to hear that information (the saying — “walls have ears”), the information can get to the wrong ears and cause dangerous aftermaths.

It also pays to know the information we share online, there are certain things that we should keep private and out of the various social networks..no one needs to know the location you are taking your pictures in (unless it is very important), no one needs to see the live video of where you are, information sharing can be exploited in various unspeakable terms.

People, let’s be safe out there. The world is becoming more unfriendly, watch what you say and where you say it, It can go a long way in keeping you safe.

BE SAFE OUT THERE
