Social Media

Have you ever thought about the effects that social media have on you? The committee on adolescent health care says, that social media causes higher rates of depression, suicidal ideation, obesity, stress, and poorer school performance. Everyone here has at least one or more social media accounts that they use on a daily basis. Being someone who uses social media at least once every day, I know the some of effects it can have on us. Social Media causes more harm the longer you use it.

One study out of the University of Pittsburgh found a correlation between time spent scrolling through social media apps and negative body image feedback. Those who had spent more time on social media had 2.2 times the risk of reporting eating and body image concerns, compared to their peers who spent less time on social media. The participants who spent the most time on social media had 2.6 times the risk

Medical daily says that, “If you spend two hours each day on social media, try cutting that time in half.” We tend to fall into a downward spiral browsing, refreshing content on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, among many others, that there is no end to the updates The more time we spend trying to catch up online, the more we feel like we’re missing out. Moreover, we subconsciously start to compare ourselves to our digital “neighbors,” which makes us feel more depressed than the comparisons we make offline. However, the photos and statuses we see from our friends are only a highlight reel of their lives; the hardships and sad moments hardly make it online. To help counter all of the negativity try cutting the amount of time you spend focused on social media and cut in half, you will see the difference it makes in your life.

I was curious about whether or not it would work to cut down the time you spent on social media, so I did my own study and spent an entire week away from social media. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be and at the end of the week I didn’t worry what people on social media thought or focused on how many likes my pictures were getting. I spent the time hanging out with friends and catching up on homework.

To close you can see that we talked about the negative effects of using social media can have on us. We mentioned how long we are using social media. And finally we talked about some simple ways to fix the issues that social media causes. So as you can see from the points I have made, social media does indeed causes more harm to your mind than it does good. The best way to fight the negative effects with social media is to try and limit the amount you spend on it. Try cutting the time in half and you will see improvement in yourself.
