Why Singers Need to Know About Oral Anatomy and Health

Singers often focus on breathing technique, laryngeal control, and good body stance to produce the best sound. However, many of them don’t pay as much attention to their mouths as they should — and that can be an issue because oral anatomy and health can affect singing in many different ways. Below are a few oral facts that all singers need to be aware of.

The tongue plays an important role in helping singers produce consistent and focused tones. So if the tongue is too tense (which is often a result of nerves), it may be harder to produce the exact sounds that you want. You can test for tongue tension by checking to see if you can move your tongue from side to side without moving your jaw; if you can’t, you can try certain stretches to help your tongue relax.

Keeping the jaw relaxed is essential if you don’t want to put a strain on your vocal cords. You also want to avoid straining the jaw itself, as it could lead to pain that makes everyday tasks like chewing and speaking more difficult. Singers should take the time to make sure that their jaws are relaxed at the hinges, allowing them to open softly to produce the sounds they need.

The tongue, lips, and jaw all work together to produce vowel sounds. Paying attention to how these elements work together allows singers to be understood more easily. When shaping the lips to form vowel sounds, you need to keep them relaxed so that they don’t cause any jaw tension. In general, your mouth should be shaped like an oval for the “ah” sound, round for the “oh” sound, puckered for the “oo” sound, and relaxed for the “ee” sound; taking the time to get used to how the mouth feels for these specific sounds can make a big difference.
