Why you should know about WordPress Staging

In light of the Gutenberg fiasco in WordPress 5.0 release, one important feature that came to light was WordPress Staging. A WordPress Staging environment is where you can test or play around with your site without it affecting your live site.

Imagine that you want to update an old plugin, but you are not sure how it will work with the rest of your site. Once you install the plugin it might not be compatible, and break parts of your site. This might happen more often than you would think.

This is where Gutenberg comes into the picture. Everyone, from single site owners to agencies and developers, is worried about their sites breaking when their site is updated with the WordPress 5.0 rollout. There are a variety of issues but the main ones are to do with Backward Compatibility. This is the property of a system to be fully functional even in its older versions. Custom posts, forms, meta boxes, and other such content will not be compatible with Gutenberg. Similarly, editing existing posts will also be problematic.

Figuring out the problem areas and fixing them on the live site is risky, considering that the site’s visitors might only actually see a broken site or even the dreaded white screen of death. Now a WordPress staging site can make a world of a difference.

WordPress migration involves moving the site from one domain to another usually. But it can also be used to stage as in the case of Duplicator plugin. But you’ll have to use a separate plugin for password protecting the staging site.

To stage your site before updating to the Gutenberg editor is a smart move. Use any of the above-mentioned methods to stage your site so that you can verify that it is fully functional.
